Setting up Simple DNS Plus with CYBERsitter is fast and easy.
Don't think you need to be a network expert! You don't. While Simple DNS Plus is a powerful, full featured DNS server, no particular expertise is required to set it up to use CYBERsitter's lists.
While DNS may seem to some like one of those things you simply so not want to know about, it is actually very simple.
Think of a DNS server like a phone book for the Internet. If you want to go to www.cybersitter.com, your request goes to a DNS server somewhere. Computers don't really connect using friendly names, they connect by using IP addresses. The DNS server you access looks up www.cybersitter.com for you, and tells your program what the actual IP address is, and you connect. Simple. The procedure DNS servers use to look up an IP address is rather complicated, however none of that matters as far as the user is concerned.
You are not confined to using the DNS server your ISP tells you to, and users on your network are not confined to using a specific DNS server. They can use whatever DNS server you set them up to use.
Here is where Simple DNS comes in. You run it locally on a server or workstation you designate. It uses very little in the way of resources, and running a local DNS server actually speeds up your Internet access.
When you request a site by a friendly name like www.cybersitter.com, Simple DNS will first check to see if it is a blocked site. If it is, you will be redirected to a "blocked page". If it isn't, the page will connect normally.
In other words, it is like using your own special phone book instead of dialing information.
Step 1 - Install Simple DNS Plus
You need a computer to act as a server, however this can be any computer running Windows 2000, XP, 2003, Vista, or 2008.
You don't even need a terribly powerful computer. Simple DNS Plus is very efficient and the CYBERsitter Lists plug-in architecture is very fast.
Download and install Simple DNS Plus. It is very easy to install and set up. You do not need to change your DNS records, or do anything complicated. Simple DNS Plus can basically work stand alone DNS resolver/server to do nothing more than handle DNS lookups for the client computers on your network.
You can get Simple DNS Plus at www.simpledns.com. A 14 day free trial version, and if you are only using it for handling DNS lookups for your network, it is only $79.95 regardless of how many computers are on your network.
Step 2 - Install CYBERsitter Lists
Download and install the CYBERsitter Lists Plug-in for Simple DNS Plus. The process takes about 30 seconds.
There is nothing to configure, no pre-deployment planning is necessary. Our updater runs as a system service, silently in the background and will maintain your lists automatically and download them whenever new updates become available.
Within 2 minutes of installation, the updater service will download the latest lists and you will be ready to go.
You can download the CYBERsitter Plug-in for Simple DNS Plus here.
CYBERsitter Lists will install as a 14 day trial version. If you like what it does for you, there is a built in, completely secure registration system that will allow you to license the product in a few seconds. In fact, if you have days left on your free trial, we will even add those days to your subscription period.
Step 3 - Configure the Simple DNS Plug-ins
Setup the Simple DNS Plug-in for CYBERsitter. You will install one plug-in for each CYBERsitter list you want to use.
You can get as fancy as you like and even exclude certain computers from being filtered by different plug-ins. There is even a special plug-in that allows you to set the times and days you want particular lists to be used.
For example, you might want all computers to be protected from malicious content, but want to exclude some from being filtered for adult content. No problem, the plug-in lets you do this. Or, maybe you want your employees to be blocked from accessing facebook during working hours, but allow them access during lunch hour. Again, no problem. Simple DNS makes it easy to customize your policies.
Simple DNS also provides a variety of other free plug-ins as well. You can create your own blacklists, whitelists, even create sophisticated lists using regular expressions.
Whether you are a novice or a power user, whatever features you need are included, and easy to use.
Step 4 - Configure Your Client Computers
You don't have to be a network administrator to set up an entire network to use the Simple DNS/CYBERsitter system. You don't even need to have access to the computers using your network. All you need to do is change a setting on your firewall or router.
Every network has a router or a firewall. One of the services your router or firewall provides is called DHCP. If you don't know what that is, don't worry. You are probably already using it and don't realize it. Basically what this does is tell all the computers on the network what Internet settings to use.
Within your DHCP settings, there will be a setting for DNS server. All you need to do is to tell your router or firewall to use the computer where you have installed Simple DNS with CYBERsitter for DNS lookups.
Now if you have a high end firewall on your network, you may need to tell it to allow Simple DNS to access the outside, but if you have a high end firewall, you probably already know what you need to do.
That's pretty much all there is to it. Computers currently on-line will probably take a few hours to recognize the changes when they renew their "lease", but you can simply reboot these computers so that the changes take effect immediately.
You can also specify the DNS server on the local computer if you like. These settings are available in the network TCP/IP settings area.
You can whatever lists you need, and you can even specify times when the lists should be active.
All our lists are updated as needed and some are updated as frequently as every hour, 24/7/365.
Lists are maintained using automated data collection methods, as well as from user submissions and old fashioned human research.
We take our list maintenance very seriously and have since we first offered CYBERsitter in 1995. False positive and missed site reports are handled immediately and updated lists are made available for download.
Our plug-in for Simple DNS plus handles all downloads in the background and you can be sure you always have the latest lists installed.
Every subscription to CYBERsitter Lists includes all categories. You can choose the ones you need, and add or remove lists at any time.
If you are looking for high prices, per seat licensing, and high annual fees, you won't find them here. We invite you to compare our pricing to any leading content management provider.
We offer low cost, no nonsense licensing on a per server basis. That means you can have 10 or 10,000 computers protected for the same low annual subscription fee.
All pricing includes software updates, subscriptions to all lists, hourly list updates*, and free technical support for the life of your subscription.
Please use the form on the right to contact us, or if you are inquiring about educational or business licensing, you can contact a sales specialist at 1-800-388-2761 Ext. 4256.

How is this different from CYBERsitter or other Internet filtering programs?
CYBERsitter and other Internet filter products offer many features monitoring and access control in addition to filtering. While these are useful in some situations, you have to purchase a license for each computer. And, in our experience, the vast majority of users are simply concerned that objectionable content is blocked. In addition, filters installed on individual computers are always going to have conflicts with other programs such as anti-virus and Internet security suite products. CYBERsitter Lists for Simple DNS Plus runs completely isolated from every computer on your network. You get the best blocking in the industry with none of the headaches.
Can I use this and an Internet filter at the same time?
Sure. Internet filters run on the local computer and CYBERsitter Lists and Simple DNS runs on a different computer.
Can this block objectionable content from "visiting" computers?
Absolutely. Let's say you have a school where students are allowed to bring their own laptops. When they connect to your wired or wireless network, they will automatically be blocked from accessing objectionable or other material you have elected to block.
Will this work with gaming consoles such as Wii, Xbox, and Playstation?
Yes. Any device that has Internet access needs to look up DNS information. Internet enabled gaming consoles, iPods, Wi-Fi enabled smart phones, etc. will all be subject to the restrictions you have in place.
Can I whitelist sites I do not want blocked?
Yes. Simple DNS Plus provides a very powerful plug-in architecture that includes a whitelist plug-in.
Can I also add sites to be blocked?
Yes. Simple DNS Plus also provides a blacklist plug-in for users to define their own blacklists.
Can I specify days and times certain categories of sites can be accessed?
Yes. Simple DNS Plus provides a special plug-in that will allow you to control which blacklists are used during specified times or days. In a business environment for example, you can make social networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace off-limits during working hours, but allow access before/after work or during lunch hour.
Solid Oak Software was founded in 1990. Our primary focus then, as it is now, is computer security.
